Euchre

the Canadian and North American partnership game – 4 players in two teams – 24 cards (9 to ace)

Cards and deal

  • Partners sit opposite. Everyone gets 5 cards; the next card is turned up for all to see and the other 3 stay face down.
  • Trump ranking: right bower (jack of trumps), left bower (the other jack of the same colour: hearts–diamonds, spades–clubs), ace, king, queen, 10, 9. The left bower belongs to the trump suit, not to its own suit.
  • Other suits: ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9.

Making trumps

  • Round one: starting left of the dealer, each player passes or orders up the turn-up: its suit becomes trumps and the dealer picks it up and discards one card face down. The dealer may pick it up himself.
  • Canadian loner rule (toggle, on by default): in round one the dealer’s partner may order up only by going alone.
  • Round two: if all four pass, the card is turned down and any other suit may be named trumps. If everyone passes again the hand is redealt – with stick the dealer (toggle, on by default) the dealer may not pass and must name a suit.
  • The player who makes trumps is the maker and may go alone: the partner lays down their cards and sits out.
  • Toggle: defending alone – against a lone maker one defender may also go alone.

Play

  • The player left of the dealer leads (with a lone maker, the player to the maker’s left; with a lone defender, that defender).
  • You must follow suit (the left bower counts as trumps); otherwise play anything. The highest trump wins the trick, or else the highest card of the suit led.

Scoring

  • Makers take 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point; all 5 (march): 2 points; all 5 going alone: 4 points.
  • If the makers take fewer than 3 tricks they are euchred: the defenders score 2 (4 when defending alone).
  • The first team to 10 points wins (11 with the toggle).
