Mau-Mau

shedding game – 2–4 players, 32 cards (Hungarian: Makaó)

Aim and deal

  • The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the round.
  • Everyone gets 5 cards (switch: 6). The rest is the stock; its top card is turned up to start the discard pile. A special starting card goes back and a new one is turned.

Playing and drawing

  • On your turn, play a card of the same suit or the same rank as the top card.
  • If you cannot or do not want to, draw one card. If it fits, you may play it at once; otherwise the next player goes.
  • Cards of the same rank may be played together (switch). When the stock runs out, the discard pile (except its top card) is reshuffled.

Special cards

  • Seven: the next player draws 2 – unless they play a seven too; then the following player draws 4, and so on.
  • Eight (Hungarian rules: ace): the next player misses a turn – unless they play the same card on it, passing the skip on.
  • Jack (Hungarian rules: queen/Ober): goes on any card (not on an open seven or skip) and wishes a suit. Then that suit must follow, or another wishing card.
  • Hungarian rules: the queen (Ober) wishes a suit, the jack (Unter) wishes a rank (eight, nine, ten, king).

Last card!

  • Before playing your second-to-last card, press Last card! (“Makaó!” in Hungary). Forget it and you draw 2 penalty cards (Hungarian rules: 5).

Scoring

  • The player who went out scores 0; the others score the cards left in hand: 7–10 face value, jack 2, queen 3, king 4, ace 11.
  • When someone reaches 100 points the game ends and the lowest score wins. Switch: the first to win 5 rounds. Can also be played with a 52-card French deck.
