Doppelkopf

German trick-taking game (DDV tournament rules) – 4 players, secret partners – 48 cards

Cards

  • Every card exists twice: nine, ten, jack, queen, king, ace in four suits. Ace 11, ten 10, king 4, queen 3, jack 2, nine 0 – 240 card points in total. Everyone gets 12 cards (in threes); the player left of the dealer leads.
  • Trumps in a normal game, from the top: ten of hearts (Dulle), the queens (clubs, spades, hearts, diamonds), the jacks (same order), then ace, ten, king, nine of diamonds – 26 trumps. Side suits: ace, ten, king, nine (hearts only ace, king, nine).
  • Of two identical cards, the one played first wins (the Dullen too).

Partners

  • The two holders of a queen of clubs are Re, the other two are Kontra. Who belongs to whom is secret until a queen of clubs is played or an announcement is made.
  • Holding both queens of clubs you may announce a Hochzeit (wedding): your partner is the first other player to win a trick within the first three tricks; if nobody does, you play a diamonds solo. Without announcing it you play a silent wedding, alone against three.

Reservations

  • Before the first lead everyone says “healthy” or “reservation” in turn. A solo beats a wedding (with rule switches also throw-in and poverty).
  • Solos (alone against three): diamonds, hearts, spades or clubs solo (Dullen, queens, jacks and the chosen suit are trump), queens solo, jacks solo, no-trump solo (Fleischloser). The player left of the dealer leads in a solo too.

Play

  • You must follow suit (trump counts as one suit); there is no obligation to win or to trump.
  • Announcements: Re or Kontra while you still hold at least 11 cards; then “no 90” (10 cards), “no 60” (9), “no 30” (8), “schwarz” (7). The other party can still reply Re/Kontra with one card fewer. In a wedding the deadlines move by one or two cards if the deciding trick is the 2nd or 3rd.

Scoring

  • Re needs 121 card points (120 if only Kontra was announced), Kontra 120 (or 121). After your own no 90 / 60 / 30 you need 151 / 181 / 211, after schwarz every trick; against such an announcement 90 / 60 / 30 points or a single trick are enough.
  • Points for the winners: won 1; opponents under 90, 60, 30, no trick +1 each; Re and Kontra announced +2 each; every further announcement +1; 120 against no 90 (90 against no 60 …) +1; against the club queens (Kontra wins a normal game) +1.
  • Extra points (normal games only, for the party that earns them): Doppelkopf (a trick of 40+ points), fox caught (an opponent’s ace of diamonds), Karlchen (jack of clubs wins the last trick) – +1 each.
  • Everyone wins or pays this value; in a solo the soloist triple.
  • Rule switches: without nines (40 cards), the second Dulle beats the first (always, or except in the last trick), Schweine (both aces of diamonds in one hand: above the Dullen), poverty (at most 3 trumps: cards may be exchanged), no solos, no Karlchen, throw-in with 5 nines / 5 kings.
